[Blog] Why Getting Rid of Keane is Wrong
Written by superblueflude on Wednesday, 21st Oct 2009 13:17

OK, so hands up those of you who were at the game last night, thinking at half-time, what a performance, what amazing passing, amazing skill, team work, solid defending etc etc. Now hands up to those of you who after the game, booed the players, booed the manager and booed everyone else except themselves.

I have a question for you boo boys - what would getting rid of Roy Keane achieve? Another manager will sign another striker, will be one thought, he'll create confidence, is another.

Fair points but let's look at the the match last night, and of that against Swansea and every game following that defeat to Newcastle.

Our defence is becoming more solid, our midfield are creating more chances, our strikers are shooting more at goal. Every game has brought an improvement and last night games sums up how a lack of confidence hurts a club. As soon as the board went up the panic set in, four minutes to keep this lead, that's all that was going through the mind of not only every fan but every player on that pitch.

Yes, Watford scored and yes another two points were lost, but one thing that can't be taken away is the way we played, the improvement, the togetherness of the squad.

What is wrong with you boo boys? Yes, it wasn't a win but surely you can see the win is coming. Keep faith. Think of it this way, if we were top half and last night happened no one would blink an eyelid, people would have said Town played well all game and been robbed, but that's not we're reading, it's the same story of Keane's got to go, he's useless etc.

But seriously everyone, what else can Keane do, the team was perfect last night, nothing can be faulted, yes chances weren't taken but we had chances to miss, something we didn't create before the Newcastle game.

People says Keane's man-management needs questioning. Why? Because of what the tabloids say about him? Being honest and telling a wantaway player that we own him and we will sell him if we want to (Lisbie), that's not bad player management that's honesty!

Look at David Wright. Yes, he was dropped, trained with the youths and now look, he's back, stronger than before, working hard day in day out.

Garvan's the same, he's improving and working hard. He will get back in the team. Don't forget Keane worked under Sir Alex and I'm sure Sir Alex did the same thing to players at that club, it's called a reality check, something the Town players needed. No more going through the motions, getting through games thinking as long as I don't look bad I don't need to look good either.

Hard work and commitment is what is needed and that is what Keane is bringing out from these guys. We don't need a new defender, we don't need a new striker, we need to keep going and on Saturday I truly believe it's three points and if not, then I will be happy with a point because soon enough that first win will come and our run will start and that includes being unbeaten.

So, now it's two games unbeaten, on Saturday let's make it three, they all count.

Why is getting rid of Keane wrong? The simple answer is - he's doing the best that any other manager would do, and you can see that from the performance last night. Keep the faith boo boys, shut up and support, and we will be fine.

callumgarryskeemer, you enjoy your football don't you? I've read a few of your comments over the last few weeks and God forbid the Team should have a bad patch as it is completely re-built/ culture changed/ Manager and coaches changed/ new Chief Exec brought in??! We are a big part of the Ipswich Town Football Club and what the Team and Manager needs is our support. I applauded Keane and the players off the pitch last night and will continue to do so while they work endlessly to get the results we deserve. Those results are just round the corner.

Firstly if Roy Keane can regularly get performances out the team like that then I think we can be more than optimistic about getting out of the mess we find ourselves in.

Managers all make mistakes - what about some of Jim's signings that never really cut the mustard. Yes Jim did sign some good players as well so lets not be too judgemental here.

Leadbitter is a great signing and will be formidable at this level with Norris back alongside him.

Edwards showed class yesterday and perhaps a shame we didn't try to sign him before Lee Martin.

I thought Rosenior was one of our best players Saturday against Swansea, so last nights performance wasn't a surprise. The partnership with Edwards looked really good, and the guys desire to work hard and get down the line made a lot of difference.

However, had we had somebody of the quality of Nathan Ellington in front of goal then perhaps the game would have been dead and buried long before the 94th minute.

But lets keep everything in perspective. The table doesn't lie we have been the worst team in a very competitive Championship this year. Blackpool & Scunthorpe keep putting in the performances so its still not going to be easy to go to some of these places (where despite our position - a RK team will still seem to be a big scalp. This is where the RK effect works against us).

I too believe we should keep our faith with Roy Keane and sacking him now would do us no good whatsoever.

You can never be too good to go down, ask Charlton, Leicester, Leeds, the budgies & Southampton.

A colleague of mine is a Southampton season ticket fan, he assured me last year that they would get out of the mess they were in. They were playing some fabulous football (beat us here and scored three goals) but with a young team. Couldn't kill teams off and kept giving away silly goals.

I think both Tommy Smith & Connor Wickham will turn out to be great players but we just need a bit more maturity & cutting edge to parts of the team.

matt the blue - I was being sarcastic when I said it was an improvement.

good article there. unfortunately the anti-keane brigade will not buy it and so the argument will continue as pointless as it is.
I applauded the team off last night as they all gave 100% and put on a sparkling performance. that is all we can ever ask of our team. yes we are in a bad position but booing and moaning will not help the players to get us out of it

UEFA81 - I had figured that one thank you very much, my rant was pointing out the futility of it. After all, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Let me when you've got something intelligent to bring to the table.

sarcasm is indeed the lowest form of wit - you are right, but as my college tutor informed me last year, it is also the highest form of intelligence.

I agree that getting rid of Keane is wrong. There would need to be another 'painful' transition from one manager to another. We will need to win quite a few games to stay up, so that winning habit needs to begin soon. Something like 14 wins and 7 draws out of the remaining 33 games would probably see us safe, which is 'playoff' form. Some of those games will require us to turn draws into wins, rather than wins into draws.

Then sir, your college tutor is a fool.

i think if we don't get rid of keane now it will be too late. I know he is trying and we deserve to have won a few games but he has madde some tactical errors and ruined our club to be honest. We have never played the ball in the air before and i rarelly see it on the deck. There are so many ipswich fans in denial saying everythings going to be okay, that table don't lie and if we don't get a win againts plymoth we are in serious trouble, Inside information has told me that the board are not behind keane and won't sack him because we cant afford to but ive heard if we dont get a win againts plymoth then keane will be sacked! How can you explain no win in 14 games its a joke, we are going to do a norwich unless things change now, dropping garvan over trotter is disgracful and keane sitting in the dug out instead of motivating the lads is a joke. We are league 1 unless keane is gone so we need to make a decision where we want to be next year!
